Description
Program: Lincoln County Historical Society
Susan Tissot became the Executive Director for the Lincoln County Historical Society in May 2022. Susan has spent her 32 year career in the museum field working in 4 western states; 20 years of her career Susan has been an Executive Director. The LCHS operates two locations in Newport: their Flagship property, the PMHC on the Bayfront directly across from Port Dock 5 and next door to the Local Ocean restaurant, and their 9th Street property which is the 1895 Burrows House/Carriage House and Log Cabin Research Library. (Our 9th Street property is just a block away from the Newport Chamber offices.) The LCHS began its work in 1948. Their first project was to save the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse which then became their first museum location. The LCHS moved their operations to the 1895 Burrows House in the 1970's.
In 2004 the LCHS purchased the former Smugglers Cove restaurant/bar/nightclub site that had sat vacant between 1999-2004. With support from the greater community, the LCHS has spent the last 18 years renovating the 30,000 Sq ft building into the museum, the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center. The PMHC is a true labor of love with the community investing 3.5 million dollars that includes cash contributions, grant support, volunteer time and in kind donations. Susan Tissot will give us an update on the benefits of having this beautiful facility in our community.
